Personal History
Willow "Will" Harper was born Gae'lin Ilisys. He was the youngest child of a family of elves, and honestly his early years were mostly very normal. Of course a lot of this normal also included the repetition of the statement "Why can't you be more like your brother?" and "Why can't you be more like your sister?" Will-- Gae'lin at the time -- was, however, not much like either of them. His sister and brother were both accomplished scholars -- his sister, Cryselle, eventually becoming a healer who specialized in science and magic for her skills in medicine. His brother, Tanyth, took a more political route. And Gae'lin wanted nothing more than to sing and play his lute or spend his days buried in books about romance and adventure instead of books related to his studies. His family dismissed his music interest as frivolous and downplayed his talent, assuring him that he did not have the skills to do anything worthwhile with that pursuit.

Gae'lin got into some trouble in the elven equivalent of his teenage years in a fit of adolescent rebellion and fell in with the wrong crowd. Unfortunately this didn't mean the shoplifting and smoking outside the local tavern type of trouble. Nope. It meant the signing your soul over to a questionably evil archfey patron in exchange for power type of trouble. But for a kid who'd always felt lost in the shuffle and about as unspecial and unremarkable as a person can be, it sure seemed like a good idea at the time. That was one of Gae'lin's problems really, common sense seemed more of a rare item to him than it ought to have been.

Despite the initial surge of feeling like he'd finally found where he belonged, found a purpose to his life, found someone who appreciated him for what he could do, the requests and desires of his Patron seemed to be growing more and more unpleasant. He followed them of course, he was bound and dedicated. It wasn't too long before there was blood on Gae'lin's hands that he was starting to think might stain permanently. Archfey had enemies, and Gae'lin turned out to be talented with charming his way into the circles he needed to and equally talented at murder. It took several years, and many more layers of blood before something in him broke. The power wasn't worth it anymore, if it meant becoming this monster.

Now, had Gae'lin been a braver man, or a wiser man, maybe he would have tried to break his pact and leave that way, a clean cut so he could start over, start a new. He was not particularly wise nor exceptionally brave, and his choice of ending this chapter in his life was running away and living in full denial.

He had been traveling at the behest of his Patron for a while, so he just kept moving. He started ignoring her voice in his head, as if he could no longer hear her. He could, of course, but he pretended he couldn't, not fooling his Patron or himself. It was a very mature choice. Most of the time he would refuse to answer, clinging tightly to that denial, though his Patron was patient enough that she believed he would eventually come back. Or she found his childish avoidance amusing enough to let it slide for the time being.

Gae'lin took on the stage name Willow Harper, usually going by Will, as a way to start over anew and to distance himself from any of the enemies he may have made during his warlock days. There are definitely some, and deservedly so. His general plan for this grand new life and escape from his past seemed to be to just keep moving. So he did. He picked up his lute again and earned his keep quite literally singing for his supper. It turned out, despite how his family had downplayed his abilities, that he was actually quite talented. The magic came through music, and Will took this as a sign that he was now on the right track. And everything would be great. His past would never come back to haunt him at all. Ever.

Along his travels, he met up with another elf named Kristophe who, thankfully, seemed to have some sense to spare. The two struck up a very close friendship and fell into traveling together. And bless the eladrin, Will had supervision to stop him from being taken in by every pretty face and bad decision that came his way. Will adored Kris and would be keen on murdering anyone who hurt him without hesitation.

Of course, he didn't tell Kris about his past right away because that would get in the way of lying to himself, and he wasn't really into doing that. The denial was a skillset and Will had proficiency in it. Eventually though, he knew that Kris deserved to know the darker pieces of him, and he revealed some parts of who he was before he was Will Harper, including his ill-advised pact with his archfey Patron. He still kept the details rather short, a lingering fear that the darkness in him might drive away someone who was as much a kind, shining light as Kristophe. Will didn't think he could bear losing Kristophe, who was clearly only a friend and not the source of terrifyingly strong romantic feelings at all.

Eventually their travels led them to the hottest fucking place south of the goddamned sun Juniper Springs, where they have been spending their time most recently, helping sort out some local troubles and leaving the world a better place. For coin and fun stories. They've taken out a horrible capitalist jerk who had too much of the town under his thumb, rid the local mine of a monster, solved a few missing people mysteries, had a weird fieldtrip to a land out of time and a haunted strange house. It's been an adventure. Will has come to like several of his fellow rent-a-heroes quite a bit. In particular Molly (fellow ginger menace) and Haze (strange but horrifically adorable little thing).

Appearance: Tall, very slender, very pale with waist-length bright red hair, with the tendency to dress like he's a fantasy world rockstar, Will is not a man who easily blends into the background. Picture!

Current Condition: Fit as a fiddle

Abilities: Will is a D&D Bard and Warlock.

As a bard he can cast spells through music, usually his lute, but he can sing in a pinch. His bard spells tend towards more psychic damage or buffs for his allies, though there are notable exceptions.

As a warlock he can eldritch blast things. And change his appearance at will. His warlock abilities are more directly offensive and destructive. He does tend to avoid overtly resorting to his warlock abilities because they tend to bring up questions that he doesn't want to answer. Not shady at all.

All his spells are listed on his character sheet here.

Inventory: WHY HIS DAGGER GONE. No basically if he's losing all his weapons, the boy has the clothes on his back and his lute and his pretty face, several hair ties in his pockets, a journal he uses to jot down song ideas and snippets, and pressed within the pages are flowers that have made his way to him from a certain flower-coded eladrin. Oh and a brush. Never go anywhere without a hairbrush when you're 76% hair by volume.

Personality: Please pick five (5) of these questions to answer! Please try to keep answers between 100-300 words for each question.

❧ How does your character handle stressful situations?
Will's coping strategies are, in order, Flirt, Flight, Fight

Humor, avoidance and heavy denial. Willow deflects most things with an easy joke or laugh and an overabundance of drawling charm. When he can. When that doesn't work, might be time to run. He's pretty good at running and leaving things behind, but that's something that's changed recently. Meeting Kris was the first thing that changed this. He finds he doesn't want to run from the cleric, from how safe and sound and right he feels with his dear friend nearby.

And now meeting other new friends has Will wanting to curtail his flight instinct as well. So bit by bit he's learning not to just immediately flee complicated things.

He is also no stranger to fighting for things he believes are the right thing to do, so pushed to it, he is not shy to enter the fray -- physically and metaphorically. If he can't talk his way out of stressful situations, if he can slip out of them without being noticed, then fighting it is. And Willow can be vicious when it comes to fighting, depending on the situation.

❧ If your character had to choose between saving a loved one and saving an entire city of innocents, who do they pick? (Yes, it’s the trolly problem and I don’t regret it)
Will is saving a loved one, without question or hesitation. Now that list of who constitutes a "loved one" is a short, short list. Right now that list consists mostly of Kris. Maybe his sister. Maybe Molly. Generally, Willow does want to help people. He has no problems risking his own life for this pursuit, but if his choice comes down to rescuing Kris or an entire population of innocents, that math is worryingly simple for him. He realizes that it's a selfish choice in many ways, and fully knows that if Kris were asked he'd absolutely insist that he be left in order for Will to save others, but to hell with that.

Will isn't in the practice of second guessing himself anyway, and even in the aftermath, even looking back on it, he would not regret a second of making this decision.

But outside that short list of loved ones, Willow is very capable of doing math for the greater good. The equation just breaks in a few specific cases.

❧ What does home mean to your character? When was the last time they were home and how will they deal with being away?
Home never meant much to Will at all. Growing up, home was where he spent his nights, but only because there wasn't much other option. It was never a haven, never somewhere he felt like he belonged. So for a long time, home didn't mean much at all to Willow. He never had deep roots or felt like he belonged, so leaving and turning to the road was easy. Too easy.

He's only recently come to understand that home is more than just the place you lay your head at night. He has someone he truly cares about now, a friendship that has become so important to him that he doesn't know what he'd do if he ever lost it. Somehow home has started to be a person. Wherever they go, well, as long as Will can be with Kris, then he's already home. It's a precious, overwhelmingly, wonderful, frightening thing.

If Kris isn't there, if they're separated, then it's going to be a major adjustment for Willow. He'd probably revert back to his old ways, slip more into the performing bard persona, put up walls and pretend everything is fine. Because everything is fine as long as no one knows it isn't fine, right? That's totally how this works?

❧ What is the hardest lesson your character has ever had to learn?
Will is still in the process of learning his hardest lesson -- that his actions have consequences, and that he can't pretend those consequences away. The things that he done during his warlock days still haunt him, in the darker corners of his mind reminding him of his mistakes and the terrible things that he has done. There's a lot of guilt and a lot of wishing he could undo the past, make different choices. He knows there is a lot of darkness in him, and worst of all, he knows how easy (and sometimes thrilling) it was to embrace it. He was good at it. He knows he'd still be good at it, and sometimes there's still temptation to swing back down that path. Being good is hard. The high road is not a comfortable one to walk, but he does think he's starting to like himself as a person more the longer he walks it.

He still is too quick to turn to denial, to pretend that things either didn't happen or don't still affect him (or have rippling affects for those it impacted too). He's started to confront this thought, but it's very much a work in progress. He has however learned enough to know that he wants to be better, and is trying to do better.

❧ What does your character want most, and what do they need most?
Willow wants to find a home. Growing up, he was always the odd one out in his family. He always felt lesser, different, not enough, never enough. He's been a disappointment since he was born. He desperately wants someone to look at him like he's worth looking at, like he's worth something. It's one of the reasons he enjoys being a bard, enjoys the attention he earns when he's playing on stage. He lives for the applause, applause applause. Sure those people are clapping for a character, stage name Willow Harper, musician, storyteller, smiling face and laughing voice. It's still attention, still adulation.

What he needs most is someone to actually see him with all his flaws and his insecurities and his darkness and light and maybe even accept him for all of it. That's the hard part, isn't it? He doesn't even accept all of himself yet, so this is a rather high hope on his part.

He also needs to learn to believe that he can be better than his worst decisions. He's trying. Gods is he trying. He wants to help people, wants to make the people he cares about happy, wants lots of things. But will any of that ever offset all his sins? He's not entirely sure that math will ever work, but he still wants to try.

He also needs to man up and deal with his Patron once and for all instead of embracing denial and running from all his problems.
